The Avon Breast Health Outreach Program has awarded a $40,000 one-year grant to the YWCA of Greater Miami- Dade to increase awareness of the lifesaving importance of early detection of breast cancer, prevention and risk-reduction strategies.

Dr. Marc Hurlbert, executive director of the Avon Foundation for Women presented the check to YWCA of Greater Miami-Dade officials during a recent public ceremony.

“The YWCA of Greater Miami-Dade was selected from a national pool of more than 160 proposals, and this award is a true testament to the YWCA’s work in the community,” Hurlbert said. “It is an honor for Avon to recognize the excellence of such an amazing program that provides essential breast cancer screening, prevention and treatment services to women in Florida.”

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society, 14,460 new cases of breast cancer will be detected in Florida this year and 2,770 lives will be lost. While advances have been made in prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure, early detection still affords the best opportunity for successful treatment. The YWCA of Greater Miami-Dade’s breast health outreach program will help ensure that all women have access to early detection information and options, even poor and medically underserved women.

“We’re proud to support an organization that shares Avon’s commitment to serve as a source of inspiration and empowerment for women,” said Katja Rosa, division sales manager, Avon Products Inc. “This Avon Breast Health Outreach Program award will enable YWCA of Greater Miami-Dade to link women to low or no cost screening mammograms.

“The grant will also educate uninsured and underinsured minority women from Haitian, Hispanic, African-American and Caribbean communities. Many of our active Avon Representatives are here today to help us celebrate, and we’re very proud that the funds contributed will make an immediate difference to breast cancer patients and their families in Miami-Dade and Broward counties.”

Since 1993, the Avon Foundation, an accredited 501(c)(3) public charity, has awarded more than 1,600 grants to community- based breast health programs across the United States, including the YWCA of Greater Miami-Dade.
