On August 7, 2012, the Mayor’s Policing & Citizens’ Crime Watch Committee of Homestead and I had the pleasure of participating in the 2012 National Night Out event. National Night Out, also known as NNO, is a crime and drug prevention event that brings together residents, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations, and local officials. The committee’s focus is on crime and its purpose is to send a message to criminals that the community is proactive and will not tolerate crime in their neighborhoods.

The event began at the Phicol Williams Community Center, where backpacks were donated to students for the new school year. Organizations such as We Care, Galata, and en Familia, distributed literature and information about their services to the community. The group then took to the streets to walk around the Southwest neighborhood to show their support for peace.

The event was organized by South Dade Weed and Seed, a Homestead Police Department initiative. Some of the major contributors for the event were the City of Homestead’s Police Department, Southwest Advisory Committee, Mayor’s Policing & Citizens Crime Watch Committee, the Children’s Trust, and Humana. Councilman Jimmie L. Williams III and Councilwoman Patricia Fairclough-McCormick actively participated in the 2012 National Night Out event.

Throughout the years, NNO events have proven to be an effective, inexpensive, memorable and enjoyable program to generate support and participation in local anti-crime programs. The City of Homestead and the Homestead Police Department are committed to providing a safe environment that is free of crime, violence, and drug use for law-abiding citizens to live, work, and raise their families in comfort and peace.

The next Citizen’s Crime Watch Committee meeting will be held on September 25th at 6:30 p.m. at the Oasis Clubhouse. Everyone is welcome to attend.
