Rehabilitation Institute of South Florida at Memorial Regional Hospital South

Choosing the right rehabilitation facility can make a difference in how quickly your patients are able to recover from an injury, illness or disability. The Rehabilitation Institute of South Florida (RISF) offers advanced technology, board-certified physiatrists, a comprehensive facility and gym, and a highly trained staff. The quality, depth, and innovation of the program, which is unprecedented in most hospital settings, has allowed us to become known as the premiere facility in south Florida for inpatient rehabilitation needs. RISF sets itself apart from other rehabilitation centers in a number of ways:

The program is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) including two specialty accreditations – one for our Stroke Program and the other for our Brain Injury Program

The unit is the only inpatient rehabilitation facility in central/southern Broward County that is located in an acute care hospital. This is key as it allows a patient to receive physician driven medical management at the same time they are receiving an intensive rehabilitation program. And if a medical problem should arise, treatment is available immediately with comprehensive medical and diagnostic support

The 56 bed unit, located at Memorial Regional Hospital South, provides patients with all private luxurious rooms equipped with individual bathrooms and showers, in a comfortable, homelike environment.

With over 3,000 square feet of gym space, we offer the latest therapeutic equipment, including advanced robotic equipment. The unit also features a unique community re-entry area, known as Determination Drive. This area allows patients to practice navigating a grocery store, using an ATM machine, and getting in and out of a car. In addition, a transitional apartment allows patients and families to learn how to manage care at home.

The combination of daily physician medical management and rehabilitation management is what allows the RISF to accept a wide variety of patients early in their hospital stay which is the key to successful and maximum physical recovery from many debilitating conditions. Over 80% of the patients in RISF return home to functional lives compared to 75% nationally for rehabilitation facilities and 35% in skilled nursing facilities.

The most common diagnoses requiring a Rehab admission are neurologic—stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, brain tumor, or orthopedic— hip fracture, spinal surgery, or amputation. Many of these patients are post surgical patients or complex medical patients that have been in an acute care setting for an extended period of time and have experienced a decline in their physical capabilities.
