Celebrity trainers celebrate health and working out – On May 1, actress and fitness icon Jane Fonda teamed up with celebrity trainers including Richard Simmons, Denise Austin and Billy Banks to host the first annual “World Fitness Day.” The event, drawing thousands to the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, is designed to promote health and fitness and a lifelong commitment to staying active.
Renowned for her best-selling workout videos, Fonda is now 72 – but despite hip and knee replacement surgeries, her passion for health and fitness is stronger than ever.
“Not only will [World Health Day] be a tremendous amount of fun and a spectacular celebration of good health, it is an amazing opportunity for Atlanta, Georgia, and the nation to strengthen the mind, body and spirit of our young people,” Fonda said. “I’m part of a demographic that’s kind of ignored. We have to go into it with guns blazing and be as healthy as possible… Every aspect of your life will be better as you get older if you remain physically active.”
Legendary fitness guru Richard Simmons added, “You cannot have a healthy life without exercise for your children, teenagers and seniors. This is a day where we embrace exercise and say, ‘Please do it – you’ll live longer, feel better and think more positive.”
Denise Austin emphasized, “Come on – you’re worth it – you deserve to look and feel your best!!”
Beyond interactive workouts, World Fitness Day festivities also included performances by rapper and actor Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and The Pointer Sisters – plus California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger presented a video greeting. This year’s “World Health Day” benefitted The Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention – a nonprofit organization founded by Fonda in 1995 to “work with community leaders, residents, youth and caring networks within each community to create sustainable programs and a positive environment that will reduce the rate of adolescent pregnancy and increase opportunities for young people and their parents.
Summing up the benefits of exercise, Fonda exclaimed “Just Do It!” and also expressed sentiments shared by many people of all ages around the world: “I don’t really like working out – but I’m motivated to do it because of how I feel afterwards.” For more information about Jane Fonda’s fitness initiatives and products, visit www.janefonda.com
