The Vice Provost’s Council of the Biscayne Bay Campus at Florida International University hosted the second annual “Get Your Career In Gear” Career Development Day on February 7, 2014.

The career development day was held in partnership with FIU’s Career Services and the Student Government Association.

Seventy-one students and FIU Alumni, and twenty Vice Provost’s Council members participated in this innovative opportunity to bring experienced business leaders to FIU.

Vice Provost’s Council members served as discussion leaders, panelists and the keynote speaker. The event served to aid students in branding themselves professionally, offered them the opportunity to network with employers and business leaders and advised them on how to transition from college to the workforce.

The Honorable Marcia G. Cooke, Federal Judge of the United States District Court, commenced the career development day with an inspirational keynote address, challenging student and alumni attendees to always say ‘yes’ to opportunities to advance, and to take ‘quitting’ out of their vocabulary.

The day consisted of various workshops on professional branding, moving from hired to promoted, resume construction and how to start new employment off right.

Discussion leaders included: author Patty Soffer; Bay Harbor Islands Mayor Robert Yaffe; Bal Harbour Mayor Jean Rosenfield; Allen Levi, CPA; Stanford Lotwin, Esq; and Regine Monestime, Esq.

The interactive networking lunch provided students the opportunity to engage with Judge Betty Capote; Jerilynn Gidney; Sunny Isles Beach Mayor Norman Edelcup; Dr. Deborah Holmes; Andrew Waxman; Aventura Comm. Billy Joel; Dr. George Lipton; the Honorable Lewis Thaler; and other Council members.

To end the day, Council members Mel Chasen and Patty Soffer provided free copies of their book to student attendees titled Entrepreneurship Made E-Z, as well as an e-workbook.

Student Sydney Asensio stated, “It was a fantastic event and exposed me to a lot of the advice that I was seeking.”
