As Slow as Molasses

Have you ever heard the expression, “as slow as molasses” or as “slow as molasses in January”? Molasses is a thick, sweet, sticky syrup. It is very viscous and it flows very slowly in the cold.

There may be times in your life when you feel that things are moving too slowly. Some or all of the things you want may be eluding you. Important things like your health or the health of a loved one, a relationship, a promotion, prosperity, security and happiness may seem hopelessly elusive. It is easy to feel frustrated and discouraged because you feel that your needs and desires are not being fulfilled and your prayers are not being answered.

Human beings need to see change and improvement to feel encouraged and to be inspired to keep going and to keep trying. Otherwise, they often feel depressed, angry, bitter, disheartened and just plain miserable. Movement is sustaining and eliminates the underlying fear that your needs and desires will not be met.

When something or someone is taking a lot of time and making you impatient, you can say that it or they are as slow as molasses in January. Only a dead snail is slower. Use humor to put things in perspective.

Sometimes there is not much you can do to make things flow faster or happen sooner. You cannot speed things up. Just like the flow of molasses, you cannot hasten or rush the outcome. Accept things the way they are for now. Be patient. Be persistent. Have faith and trust.

Do not despair. Do not doubt. Do not give up. Do not lose hope or faith. Your faith will keep things moving in the right direction. You may not see any progress but that doesn’t mean that things are not moving. The changes and the progress may be imperceptible. You need to believe that things are moving but, just like molasses, they are moving so slowly that you do not see any movement at all.
